Wezesha Vijana TVET Programme Empowers 160 Disadvantaged Youth in Nairobi

Nairobi, 28th May, 2024

The Wezesha Vijana TVET Programme held its Beneficiaries’ Scholarship Award and Flag Off Ceremony at Kibondeni College celebrating 160 disadvantaged youth from Nairobi City County who were awarded scholarships to pursue technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

The scholarships, sponsored by Catholic Relief Services and the Safaricom Foundation, aim to provide these young individuals with the skills and opportunities necessary to secure sustainable employment and improve their future. Beneficiaries will receive training at various vocational training centers (VTCs), including Waithaka, Kangemi, Embakasi, Mathare, Old Mathari, and Kibondeni College.

In her Speech County Executive for Talent Skills Development and Care Rosemary Kariuki expressed deep gratitude to the Safaricom Foundation and Catholic Relief Services for their support and partnership in Wezesha Vijana Program.
Tvetprograme 3Mr. Joseph Ogutu, Chairperson of the Safaricom Foundation, said the event marked a significant milestone, celebrating the first cohort of Wezesha Vijana scholarship recipients, symbolizing the start of a transformative journey for these young beneficiaries.

The County Executive reiterated that in today’s rapidly changing world, TVET programs are crucial in equipping young people with the skills they need to thrive. “By investing in these programs, the initiative not only addresses unemployment but also fosters innovation, resilience, and sustainable income for the youth.”

Ms. Kariuki, while highlighting the government’s commitment to modernizing education, said “The importance of embracing emerging technologies and updating curriculums to meet the needs of the modern world is critical. The Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) framework and the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) framework are significant steps in ensuring that training programs are aligned with industry standards and accessible to a broader population.”
Tvetprograme 2She encouraged the beneficiaries to embrace this opportunity with enthusiasm, dedication, and a commitment to excellence, reminding them that they are the architects of their destiny. The County Government of Nairobi’s support for initiatives that enhance youth skills development was renewed, with a belief in the power of collaboration to positively impact communities. Ms. Kariuki assured continued efforts to create pathways for young people to access education, training, and employment opportunities.

The County Executive was accompanied by Deputy Director Vocational Training Leonard Mititi, principals, and instructors of benefiting institutions.
