NAIROBI: 24th June 2024
Social Services Subsector held sensitization forum for directors on the Nairobi county Older Persons welfare Policy. This initiative is a step towards ensuring that our society values, protects, and cherishes its elderly population.
Chief Officer for Social Services who represented the County Executive for Talent Skills Development and Care Rosemary Kariuki said “Nairobi, as a metropolitan hub, represents the aspirations, dreams, and collective efforts of millions. Yet, amidst this dynamic growth and progress, it is easy to overlook the needs and rights of one of our most vulnerable groups – the elderly. The Older Persons welfare Policy is a comprehensive framework designed to safeguard the dignity, well-being, and quality of life of our senior citizens.
He said “As directors, understanding and implementing this policy is crucial for several reasons. First and foremost, the Older Persons welfare Policy is rooted in the principles of human rights and social justice.
Secondly, the policy addresses the unique challenges faced by the elderly. These include health care needs, economic security, social inclusion, and protection from abuse and neglect.”
“By understanding these challenges in depth, we can design and implement programs that are not only responsive but also proactive in addressing the needs of older persons. This involves creating age-friendly infrastructure, providing accessible health services, and ensuring that older persons have opportunities for social engagement and economic participation. “Said the Chief Officer
Rose Bwire from HelpAge said “The sensitization of Directors on the Older Persons welfare Policy is beneficial and is essential. It ensures that Nairobi, as a society, do not fail those who have given us so much. It is a commitment to building a community where every individual, regardless of age, is valued and cared for. As directors, your role is pivotal in this journey. By embracing the principles and directives of the Policy, you are setting a precedent for excellence in governance and compassion in leadership.”
Let us pledge today to make Nairobi a city that truly honors and upholds the dignity of its elderly citizens.
The workshop was sponsored by Help Age.
Accompanying the Chief Officer was Director social services Shem Ombura, Dr. Kimolo Research and Policy, Deputy Director Robert Muema, Assistant Directors Fredick Ogutu and Rosemary Kibathi among others.
