Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital has successfully conducted the first bronchoscopy procedure in Nairobi County. Bronchoscopy is a vital medical procedure that enables doctors to inspect the interior of the lungs and bronchi using a bronchoscope, a slender, flexible tube with a light and camera on its tip. This marks a significant milestone in the county’s healthcare services, as highlighted by Nairobi Governor, who praised the medical team for their achievement. He emphasized that enhancing healthcare services is a top priority for his administration, aiming to upgrade all health facilities in Nairobi to provide better service.
The bronchoscope will now be available at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. During the procedure, the bronchoscope is inserted through the patient’s nose or mouth, down the throat, and into the lungs. Bronchoscopy serves multiple purposes, including:
- Diagnosing lung diseases, infections, tumors, or inflammation.
- Collecting mucus or tissue samples (biopsy) for laboratory testing.
- Removing blockages or foreign objects from the airways.
- Treating specific lung conditions, such as bleeding or narrowed airways.
The procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s condition and the procedure’s complexity. This advancement underscores the county’s commitment to improving healthcare access and quality for its residents.
