County Executive Committee Member for Green Nairobi Mr. Ibrahim Auma yesterday received a courtesy visit from the C40 Cities Incoming Regional Director Ms. Dorah Modise.
The meeting discussed areas of collaboration in matters Climate Change, amongst them continued capacity building of the County Staff on Climate Action Implementation.
Mr. Auma expressed his gratitude for the support Nairobi City County has received from C40 Cities over the years and more especially on the development of the Climate Action Plan and its implementation, citing the pilot on Solarization of the City Markets as a huge milestone for the City.
“Nairobi City County Governor, H.E Sakaja Johnson who is also the Vice Chair C40 Steering Committee is working towards realizing his vision of a greener City. With the Support of C40 Cities, the Governor is committed in implementing Nairobi County Climate Action Plan (2020-2050).” Said Mr. Auma.
The Green Nairobi CECM emphasized on the need for tangible projects that directly benefit citizens. He also called for the inclusion of local consultants when it comes to projects that directly benefit citizens, noting that local consultants resonate well with the locals, thus making project implementation by the county easy.
Additionally, Mr. Auma highlighted the need for enhanced capacity building for Climate Change and Air Quality staff specifically in conducting Greenhouse Gas Emission Assessment.
Mr. Auma assured the incoming C40 Cities Regional Director of Nairobi City County Government’s Support.
C40 Cities Regional Director Ms. Dorah Modise lauded Nairobi City County for the development and implementation of the Climate Action Plan. She noted that Nairobi has also done very well on Air Quality programmes.
Ms. Modise said there is a need for African leaders to be more present and vocal in the Climate Change space, as well as step up the leadership.
C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group is a network of 100 Cities around the world that is focused on fighting the climate crisis and driving urban action that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks, while increasing the health, wellbeing and economic opportunities of urban residents.
In attendance were; Director Environment and Natural Resources Mr. John P. Malawi, Deputy Director Climate Change and Air Quality monitoring Mr. Maurice Kavai, Assistant Director for Climate Change and Air Quality monitoring Ms. Grace Ojiayo and City Advisor – Nairobi C40 Cities Mr. Njenga Muchekehu.
