Nairobi Governor Sakaja Warns Land Grabbers as He Launches Major Market Developments Across the City

Nairobi, August 22, 2024

Nairobi City County Governor H.E. Johnson Sakaja, accompanied by his deputy H.E. Njoroge Muchiri, issued a warning to land grabbers to clear the way for the development of social amenities, including schools and markets.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Karen Market, the fourth market under construction by the County in two years (following Mutuini, Kahawa West, and Jujo), Governor Sakaja announced that his administration would also rehabilitate six existing markets: Kangundo Road, Mwariro, Pumwani, Jogoo Road, and Kayole 1.

“Having witnessed the devastating 2014 fire that destroyed the Karen market, I made a commitment to rebuild it once I took charge of the County,” Governor Sakaja said. “I assure Karen market’s informal traders that this market will be ready in record time to restore order in this community and ensure traders can conduct their businesses in a humane and dignified manner.”

In his manifesto, Sakaja pledged to deliver a total of 20 modern markets within five years. Ten of these markets will be developed in partnership with the National Government’s State Department for Housing and Urban Development in locations such as Maji Mazuri, Jogoo Road, South B, Kangemi, and Ruai Junction.
Sakswarns 5Area MP Hon. Felix Jalang’o and members of the County Assembly commended Sakaja’s government for fulfilling its promises to residents and assured him of their support.

Dr. Anastasia Nyalita, the Executive Member for Business and Hustler Opportunities, stated that her team was capable of delivering on its mandate and making Nairobi a thriving city by creating job opportunities through these markets.
Those present at the ceremony included County Chief Officers, led by the Trade and Markets Chief Officer Ms. Jane Wangui, Ms. Joyce Kyengo (Director of Markets), Ms. Serah Gichamba (Deputy Director of Markets), Mr. Joshua Ochieng and Mr. David Githaiga (Markets officers), architects, and Karen residents.
