Nairobi City County Gender and Inclusivity sub sector in collaboration with USAID and Inclusive Features through the Global Labour Programme-Inclusive features organized a disability inclusion, Gender inclusion and labour rights training on County staff from different departments.
The Global labour program-Inclusive features is a five-year (2021 – 2026) program that aims to increase the inclusion of people with disabilities, particularly women, improve, promote and protect their labour rights in Kenya. Therefore the training was seeking to sensitive County staff on disability awareness, inclusion and etiquette.
Ms. Jane Gichure the Deputy Director for Gender and Inclusivity appreciated the partners for empowering and advocating for the rights of Persons with Disability (PWDs).She said, “Nairobi County stands as a testament to the transformation that can be achieved when organizations unite for a common cause. As a County we are looking forward to partner with different stakeholders to ensure that there is inclusion and promotion of equal access to opportunities for people with disabilities and advocating for their full, active and meaningful participation in the mainstream development agenda on an equal basis with others.”
Ms. Roselyne Olewe, the Chief of Party for Sightsavers said that the economic empowerment program targeting women with disabilities was aligned to the County’s Vision on restoration of Order, Dignity and availing Opportunities for all. She said, “I appeal to the County to provide conducive working environment to women with disabilities and where possible provide waivers on business licenses. Sightsavers and the County will conclude on the letter of collaboration which will formalize the partnership between the two organizations.
Ms. Pauline Aroko representing UDPK said that the Organization had developed a Disability Inclusion Score Card that they were willing to share with the County.
The programme also provides training and support to women retailers with disabilities, enabling them to grow their retail businesses and organize into groups. This gives them a platform to discuss common issues affecting them and negotiate better margins from product sales.
The Facilitators of the training were from different organizations including Sight Savers, United Disabled Person of Kenya (UDPK), Kenya Female Advisory Organization (KEFEADO) and Central Organization of Trade Union (COTU).
