A total of 60,451 trees were planted today across Nairobi City’s 17 Sub Counties in commemoration of the lives lost to the floods and damage of property.
Nairobi County Director in charge of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Mr. John P. Malawi, who spearheaded the tree planting exercise at Railway Training Institute in South C, said that Nairobi County has been in the forefront working towards enhancing environmental conservation across the city, adding that through strategic partnerships, community engagement and innovative initiatives, the County is working tirelessly to increase tree cover and contribute significantly in the achievement of national target of 15billion trees.
“As we gather here today, we not only plant trees but also sow the seeds of a greener and healthier future for Nairobi.” Mr. Malawi said.
The Environment Director called on the Nairobi residents not to lose sight of individual responsibility to nurture and protect environment. “Our commitment to environmental conservation is unwavering and initiatives like today’s tree planting serve as a tangible demonstration of that commitment.” He added.
Today’s tree planting activities took place in all sub counties of Nairobi, with Sub County Environment officers spearheading the exercise by engaging with communities to promote tree planting, tree care and environmental stewardship, as part of efforts in realizing a shared vision of greener Nairobi.
“As we dig, plant and water these seedlings, let us remember that we are not just planting trees. We are planting hope, resilience and a legacy of environmental stewardship that will endure for generations to come.” Remarked Director Malawi.
County Chief officer for Social Services Mr. George Mutiso who also took part in the tree planting exercise congratulated all those who showed up to plant trees as part of greening the City.
Other speakers present emphasized the importance of growing trees to mitigate against negative effects of climate change.
