The Nairobi City County, through its Trade and Industrialization Directorate, is collaborating with Concern Worldwide, with the support of the Citi Foundation, to introduce a business development program for mother-to-mother support groups and vendors doing nutritious value chain products. This initiative aims to empower these groups and support select small-scale businesses to improve access to nutritious foods, ultimately contributing to food security.
Concern Worldwide is an international organization headquartered in Ireland, operating in 24 countries, including Kenya since 2003. Their focus in Kenya is on informal settlements, specifically Mathare, Viwandani, Mukuru Njenga, and Mukuru Reuben.
Speaking at the launch of the Advanced Food Security Nairobi (AFSN) project, Dr. Anastasia Nyalita, Executive Member for the Business and Hustler Opportunities Sector, expressed gratitude to both the Citi Foundation and Concern Worldwide for partnering with the County. She emphasized the importance of training small-scale traders involved in nutrition value chains to improve food access.
“I also invite like-minded partners to join us in different roles to help us make Nairobi Work, as envisioned in Governor Sakaja A. Johnson’s manifesto,” Dr. Nyalita said. “Be assured of our total support to ensure the project’s success as a key component of food security.”
Both Ms. Wairimu Wahome, the Concern Worldwide Country Director, and Mrs. Maryanne Mwaura, the Citi Foundation’s Sub-Saharan Head, expressed confidence in the Sakaja administration’s support for the AFSN project, citing positive experiences with previous collaborations, particularly the Lishe Poa project.
Other attendees included Ms. Lydiah Ndungu (Assistant Director, Trade and Industry), Ms. Reginah Mwangi (Project Coordinator), representatives from the Health Sector, Inspectorate, and Sub County Administration, among others.
