Nairobi County Marks World Elder Abuse Awareness day at Mji wa Huruma.

NAIROBI: 14th June 2024

Elder abuse is a serious and growing concern worldwide. It takes many forms – physical, emotional, financial, and its effects are devastating. Our elders, who have spent their lives contributing to our society, deserve to live their golden years with dignity and respect. Unfortunately, many of them face abuse and neglect, often in silence.

Said the County Executive “Today, we are here to break that silence. We are here to raise awareness, to educate ourselves and others, and to pledge our commitment to ending elder abuse in our community.”
Worldelder 9The County Executive said “Our elders are the custodians of our history and culture. They have taught us invaluable lessons, shaped our values, and laid the foundation for our future. We owe it to them to ensure that they are treated with the kindness, respect, and care they deserve.”

She said Nairobi County is dedicated to spearheading initiatives that protect our senior citizens. Our county is committed to implementing programs that provide support and resources for our elders. This includes ensuring access to quality healthcare and establishing safe spaces where they can live free from fear and harm.”

Ms. Kariuki said Government efforts alone are not enough. “It takes a village to safeguard the well-being of our elders. She urged each one to be vigilant and proactive. If you suspect that an elder is being abused, report it. Offer your support and companionship to the elders in your community. Simple acts of kindness can make a profound difference in their lives.”

“Education is also key. We must teach younger generations to value and respect their elders. Schools, community centers, and families all play a crucial role in fostering a culture of respect and empathy towards our senior citizens. Caregiving can be a challenging task, and providing them with the necessary training and resources is essential. ” Said the County Executive.
