The Nairobi County Economic Planning Department conducted a two-day sensitization workshop for appointed sector statistics stewards on the development of the County Statistical Abstract (CSA). This publication will offer a comprehensive compilation of available demographic, social, economic, and environmental statistics for Nairobi County over a series of years.
The objective of the CSA is to provide a single source of information covering various sectors of the economy at the county and lower levels for the subsequent financial years.
Deputy Director for Economic Planning, Grace Chabari, emphasized the crucial role of the statistics stewards in the collection and management of sector specific statistics “When you are doing budgets or county plans, you need data to form basis for planning. Therefore, when we have this data in a single document, it will be used for evidence-based policy making. In any institution, when making policies, you have to declare your source of information, and for the County Government of Nairobi, this will be the CSA. You are the caretakers of statistical data in your respective sectors. As stewards, you will be expected to gather this data from your respective administrative data, censuses conducted during the reference period, and conducted surveys.”
She guided the stewards through their respective templates while explaining their roles and responsibilities in coordinating the collection, compilation, and management of sector-specific statistics. “Sector economists will provide technical assistance throughout the process.”
The Constitution of Kenya 2010 specifies that statistics is a concurrent function between the National and County Governments. Counties are mandated by Section 105(1)(e) of the County Government Act to ensure the collection, collation, storage, and updating of data and information suitable for their planning processes.
The CSA aims to:
– Provide comprehensive statistics for evidence-based policy-making, planning, budgeting, and tracking of various policies, programs, and projects.
– Identify data gaps at the county level.
– Set up a comprehensive and reliable socio-economic county database.
Said Ms. Chabari “The compilation of the Statistical Abstract will lead to informed planning and decision-making, informed access to statistics by internal and external stakeholders, accountability and transparency, and performance management.”
