Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Mr. Hibrahim Otieno yesterday stressed the need of developing bankable projects by the County Sectors in order to tap into the Climate action financing in support of the Climate Action Plan implementation.
The Environment Chief Officer was addressing Climate Change Steering Committee comprising of county staff drawn from Markets, Housing, Urban planning, Transport, Water and Sanitation, Food and Agriculture and Environment departments during Climate Change mainstreaming and Climate change financing workshop.
“To achieve the objectives of the ambitious Nairobi County Climate Action Plan, we need to work together as county sectors. Climate Action Plan implementation cannot be actioned by the environment Sector alone and that is why we are working with other sectors towards achieving our goals as a city.” Mr. Otieno said.
He noted that most climate actions are domiciled in other sectors hence the need to ensure they are all part of the implementation process.
County Director Environment and Natural Resources Mr. John P. Malawi thanked the C40 Cities, Climate Action Implementation (CAI) Africa Programme team, Environmental Compliance Institute (ECI), Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Network and Open Capital for their willingness to help Nairobi address climate change challenges by giving insights into developing and utilizing a robust Climate Finance plan and practical knowledge on investment attraction and overcoming institutional bottlenecks.
He added that the County requires immediate partnerships in the areas of capacity building, finances and technology in tackling issues such as pollution. Mr. Malawi called on the participants to action the knowledge gathered from the three day workshop in order to ensure that the city is well positioned to apply and utilize climate finance to support the Climate Action Plan implementation.
