The County department of Water and Sanitation together with United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Alliance Kenya yesterday visited several primary Schools in Mathare and Embakasi South Sub Counties to monitor the status and progress of Sanitation facilities funded by the UNICEF.
The works on the Sanitation facilities under inspection included installation of water tanks, rehabilitation and construction of new ablution blocks, construction of new and rehabilitation of hand wash points and unblocking of clogged drainage systems, aimed at uplifting Sanitation standards which are vital for promoting good hygiene practices and overall health in schools.
The County Director for water and Sanitation Services Mr. Mario Kainga commended the progress achieved and appreciated the support of UNICEF which he said complemented Nairobi County’s efforts in ensuring proper sanitation services in the county learning institutions.
“This partnership with UNICEF demonstrates Nairobi County’s commitment to improving the well-being of children and creating a conducive learning environment. The progress of all the projects is good and as a County we are pleased to partner with UNICEF in bringing dignity in our schools”. He said.
The Heads of the various schools visited expressed their gratitude to the County and UNICEF, noting that the facilities directly touched on the learners needs contributing to their dignity and wellbeing.
The joint monitoring visits reflect a dedicated approach to enhancing sanitation services in schools and ensuring a healthier and safer educational environment for all children.
Schools visited were Mathare North Primary, Nduru- runo primary, Mathare Special School, Kiboro primary, Huruma Primary in Mathare Sub-County and AEF Reuben Primary school in Mukuru, Embakasi South Sub-County.
Present during the visits were area Directors of Education and officials from the County public health department.
