Tuesday, May 21st, 2024

Nairobi City County Business and Hustler Opportunities Sector to Map Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Cooperatives.

The mapping exercise to be conducted under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), aims to determine the number and status of Co-operatives and FPOs. This information will be used to select participants for the Safer Urban Food System Component, a pilot program within the NAVCDP.

The NAVCDP is a national government project funded by the World Bank through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Development (MoALD), and the State Department for Crop Development (SDCD). It is being implemented in 34 counties.

Speaking at a two-day enumerator training session on diagnostic digital mapping tools for Co-operatives and FPOs held at Semara Hotel in Machakos, Ms. Maureen Njeri, the Executive Member for the Business and Hustler Opportunities Sector, emphasized the importance of data collection as a collective effort requiring teamwork and community interaction. Building relationships is crucial to obtaining the best data, which will be fundamental in supporting Governor Johnson Sakaja A.’s vision of making Nairobi a “City of Order, Dignity, Hope, and Opportunities for All.”
Fpo S 3Ms. Njeri urged the enumerators undergoing training to go above and beyond to achieve set targets. She also advised them to read and understand the Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) Food System Strategy and Policy document to fully grasp the process before starting fieldwork.

Mr. Godfrey Akumali, the County Chief Officer for Cooperatives, Trade, and Industry, highlighted the importance of the collected data in enhancing departmental work and decision-making. The data will serve as a baseline, and its impact will be evaluated in future years.

Mr. Akumali emphasized, “As a County, we pledge our support and commitment to this initiative. We expect the enumerators to focus on collecting quality data that accurately reflects the situation on the ground, rather than a large volume of inaccurate information.”
Fpo S 6The World Bank was represented by Ms. Rose Mwaniki, who reaffirmed their organization’s readiness and willingness to offer any support necessary to ensure the project’s success.

Present: Ms. Elizabeth Njau, Director of Trade and Industry, Panel of experts from the National Government, MS. Lydia Ndung’u, Assistant Director of Trade and Industry, NCCG (Project Market Linkage Specialist in the County Project Implementing Unit) and other staff from various County Sectors.
