Nairobi City County in partnership with C40 Cities hosted Climate Change Mainstreaming and Finance Workshop for the County Climate Change Steering Committee and other key stakeholders from the city administration. The workshop aimed at providing Nairobi County Climate change stakeholders an opportunity to validate the recently completed climate change mainstreaming strategy.
The meeting also sought to discuss and finalize a climate finance package of work for the city as well as assign roles and responsibilities for the implementation of the climate change mainstreaming strategy.
Nairobi County Executive Committee Member in charge of Green Nairobi Mr. Ibrahim Auma admitted that collaboration with C40 Cities has been instrumental in developing and implementing a robust Climate Change Mainstreaming Strategy for Nairobi City County.” We extend our gratitude to C40 Cities for the unwavering support and resources which have been vital to complementing our efforts”. He said.
Mr. Auma explained that through the partnership, Nairobi County has embarked on a transformative journey of incorporating Climate Change considerations into county policies, plans, programs and decision making processes at various levels of the capital city government.
“Our goal is to ensure that climate change is recognized as a cross cutting issue and systematically addressed in all relevant areas of governance and development. Our priority climate change mainstreaming actions focus on aligning Nairobi County’s Climate Actions with the National Climate Change Action Plan and Long Term Low Emission Development Strategy for Kenya.” He added.
The Green Nairobi Boss said that through the leadership of Nairobi Governor H. E Sakaja Johnson and the support of the County Assembly, the county has made significant progress on matters climate change including establishment of an effective and accountable framework for climate finance, raising awareness and garnering support from residents Civil society and businesses for the implementation of the County Climate Change Action Plan.
Mr. Auma termed Nairobi County Action Plan 2020-2050 as a testament to Capital City’s dedication to contributing to National greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and climate change adaptation goals.
“As the Vice Chair of the C40 Cities Steering Committee, Governor Sakaja is dedicated to ensuring that climate actions are integrated into every aspect of the Nairobi City. He deeply appreciates the support provided by C40 Cities Climate Action Implementation Africa Programme. “He added.
Mr. Njenga Muchekehu, City Advisor – Nairobi -C40 Cities, mentioned that climate change mainstreaming provides a framework to achieve coordinated climate response across government functions. He added that at the end of the workshop, city officials will gain thorough understanding of the climate mainstreaming strategy, gain insights into developing and utilizing a robust climate finance plan and also get practical knowledge on investment attraction and overcoming institutional bottlenecks.
County Deputy Director Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring Mr Maurice Kavai noted that time had come to move from ideas to action in addressing climate change issues.
