Nairobi City County Government and Danish Strategic Sector Cooperation Forge Strong Partnership for Circular Economy Advancements

Nairobi City County Government and Kenya Danish Strategic Sector Cooperation on Circular Economy held discussions on possible areas of collaboration in formulation of the 3rd phase in a meeting chaired by County Deputy Director, Climate Change and Air Quality monitoring Mr. Maurice Kavai.

The Danish Strategic Sector Cooperation on circular Economy phase 2 is on course and has been training City County officials in Green and circular Economy practices, and also took part in the formulation of Sustainable Solid Waste Management Act 2022.
Danishcoop1Today’s meeting deliberated on areas of partnership including; review of existing County laws governing solid waste management which is one of the devolved functions in the Constitution of Kenya 2010, The review will incorporate Extended Producer Responsibility(EPR), Material Recovery Facilities(MRF) guidelines and include all actors in the waste management chain.

Other areas identified for collaborations were; Public education and awareness campaigns, Capacity building and training of city officials on waste audits, environmental monitoring and compliance, Social Economic Survey of Waste pickers in the final Disposal site and Support of the ongoing pilot projects of waste segregation in partnership with KARRA.

The two also deliberated on how the City Government and the Danish protection agency can share data and information on environmental issues and trends to inform decision making and develop effective strategies for addressing environmental challenges.

Mr. Kavai stressed the importance of forming a working group that will develop a working document specifying action areas and timelines.

Attending the meeting were; Deputy Director Environmental Monitoring Compliance and Enforcement Mr. Kevin Oloitiptip, Assistant Directors Environmental Monitoring Compliance and Enforcement Ms. Christine Kivuva and Mr. Lawrence Mwangi and other Senior Environment Officers.

The Danish team was led by Ms. Christina Anderskov said they are happy to partner with Nairobi County. She said that the Danish Strategic Sector Cooperation on circular Economy is working on training of Trainers in Waste auditing in order to create a bigger impact.
