NAIROBI: 24th June 2024
Nairobi City County, being a major urban center and a hub for both internal, inter-county and international migration, faces significant challenges and opportunities related to migration management. Developing a comprehensive strategy for better migration management is crucial to ensure sustainable urban development, social cohesion, and economic growth.
The strategy will focus on three key thematic areas: research and data management, urban resilience, and peace, cohesion, and reconciliation.
Chief Officer for Social Services George Mutiso who led the team said “Effective migration management requires a solid foundation of accurate, timely, and comprehensive data.”
He said “The preparation of Nairobi City County’s migration management strategy involves a holistic approach that integrates research and data management, urban resilience, and peace, cohesion, and reconciliation. By addressing these key thematic areas, Nairobi will create an inclusive, resilient, and harmonious urban environment that benefits both migrants and the host community.”
The strategy will not only enhance the city’s ability to manage migration effectively but also contribute to its overall socio-economic development and stability.
The workshop came up with a way forward and calendar of events. The three thematic areas of consideration drew up a budget that was validated to be subjected to other stakeholders for funding. At the same workshop the report for Naivasha workshop held early this year was launched for validation by the team.
The workshop was attended by the Director IGR Joyce Kinyanjui, Dr Kimolo Research and Policy, Assistant Directors Rose Kibathi and Fredrick Ogutu representatives from IOM and NCM who are the main sponsors of the workshop
