Nairobi City County Announces New Methadone Treatment Center at Mutuini Hospital to Combat Substance Abuse

The Nairobi City County Liquor Board announced plans to establish a methadone treatment and rehabilitation center at the Mutuini Level 4 County Hospital in Dagoretti South Sub County. This initiative is part of the fight against alcohol and substance abuse.

Speaking at a consultative meeting at the hospital, Executive Member for the Business and Hustler Opportunities, Ms. Maureen Njeri, stated that the Mutuini methadone treatment and rehabilitation center will be the second of its kind. The first, the Sinai Rehabilitation Center in Viwandani Ward Makadara Sub County, offers outpatient services to residents affected by addiction and has served over 700 patients since September 2023.
Methtreatment 3“In our quest to rid Nairobi of the addiction problem,” Ms. Njeri said, “we recently finalized the drafting of the framework for the establishment and operationalization of County treatment and rehabilitation centers that are well-sustained to ensure effective service delivery.”

Executive Member for Health Wellness and Nutrition, Ms. Suzanne Silantoi, also spoke at the meeting. She pledged her sector’s support to the Liquor Board by ensuring deployment of medical professionals to the facilities, obtaining necessary approvals, and other means.

“We will also fast-track the completion of the main hospital block here in Mutuini so that we can move the hospital services there and have a full-fledged methadone treatment and rehabilitation center occupy the present hospital building,” Ms. Silantoi added.
Methtreatment 2The area Member of the County Assembly, Hon. Martin Mbugua, expressed his gratitude to Governor Sakaja for bringing back hope to the community. He highlighted various projects initiated by the Governor, including the Mutuini Market, which has created job opportunities for local youth as laborers. He believes the upcoming rehabilitation center will ensure residents are sober and empowered to take up business opportunities at the market when it’s complete.

Other attendees included the Chief Officer for Business and Hustler Opportunities, Ms. Zipporah Mwangi; the Mutuini Hospital CEO, Dr. Fredrick Obwande; the Hospital Board Chairman, Dr. Isaiah Tanui; the Hospital Medical Superintendent, Ms. Pamela Amatta; the Liquor Licensing  Director, Ms. Rhoda Otieno; Mr. Solomon Makaya, the Liquor Board Chief Administrator and other hospital board members and county officials.
