Governor Johnson Sakaja yesterday led the groundbreaking ceremony at Kihumbuini Stadium in Kangemi ear marked for construction marking a significant milestone in Nairobi City County’s commitment to upgrading and constructing sports facilities in the Capital City.
Kihumbuini Stadium is one of the key projects under Governor Sakaja’s manifesto development programs. The development of the Stadium aligns with the county’s broader vision of leveraging sports as a tool for social and economic development. It is expected to inspire a new generation of athletes and contribute to the overall growth and well-being of the community.
Governor Sakaja said the benefits of this project extend beyond the sports field, it will provide improved sports infrastructure, stimulate economic activities in the area and create jobs. It will bring the community together, fostering a sense of pride and unity. By hosting events and competitions, we will position the area as a leading destination for sports, attracting other counties and investment. The Governor also highlighted that Nairobi County currently earns over one million shillings monthly from Dandora Stadium, which is currently hosting most Kenyan soccer leagues.
Governor Sakaja emphasized the importance of sports in promoting unity, discipline, and healthy lifestyles among the youth. He said that the construction of the stadium will not only benefit the local community but also position Nairobi as a hub for sports excellence. By enhancing sports facilities infrastructure, the county government intends to provide a state-of-the-art facility that can host various sports events and serve as a training ground for young athletes. The project is expected to foster a vibrant sports culture and create opportunities for the youth to excel in their respective sports disciplines.
The City boss said that his government has ear marked other projects aside from sports facilities across the city, markets and ECDE centers. He said as the project progresses, Nairobi City County remains committed to ensuring that Kihumbuini Stadium becomes a facility that the residents can be proud of, nurturing talent and bringing the community together through the power of sports.
He said “We have a shared responsibility to ensure the success of this project. I urge all stakeholders to work collaboratively, ensuring that Kihumbuini Stadium becomes a model of what we can achieve when we come together with a common purpose. He said the youth in the area will be contracted in the construction of the stadium.
The community and sports enthusiasts who attended the event expressed their support and excitement for the project.
The ceremony was attended by County Executive members Rosemary Kariuki Talent Skills Development and Care, Dr. Anastasia Nyalita, Inclusivity, Public Participation and Customer Service, Mike Gumo, Innovation and Digital Economy, Brian Mulama, Mobility and Works, Chief Officer Youth and Sports, Oscar Igaida, local leaders among others.
