Environment and Planning Division Working Group in Nairobi commissioned to tackle environmental issues

Nairobi City County Director for Environment Mr. John Paul Malawi has lauded the commissioning of the Environment and Planning Division Working Group in Nairobi, presided over yesterday by Hon. Lady Justice Anne Omollo, the Presiding Judge Environment and Planning Division Milimani, noting that this will help address a wide range of environmental concerns including climate change, conservation and biodiversity taking into consideration key tenets of sustainable development.
Envworking Group 1“The launch of this working group is expected to facilitate dialogue, promote partnerships and develop jurisprudence on environmental law, thus enhancing efficiency in case management and adjudication of environmental disputes.” Mr. Malawi added.

Mr. Malawi who is also a member of the Environment and Planning Division Working Group, said that Nairobi City County has formulated environmental laws such as; The Nairobi City County Air Quality Act 2022, The Nairobi City County Solid Waste Management Act 2015 and Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Act 2021, that provide mechanism for environmental management within Nairobi County including guidelines on monitoring, compliance and enforcement of all environmental laws and regulations.

He mentioned notable environmental cases experienced in Nairobi, among them effluent discharge and hazardous substances, Noise and excessive vibrations pollution, air/water and Land pollution, illegal logging and encroachment into forests and other petty offences and nuisances.
Envworking Group 4The Environment Director was among distinguished guests invited at the launch of the Environment and Planning Division Working group for Environment and Land Court at Ole Sereni Hotel.

Environment and Land Court of Kenya is established to exclusively determine disputes dealing with environment and the use, occupation of and title to land. The Court is guided by the environment and Land Court Act in carrying out its role.
Envworking Group 2The event was attended by Mr. Dominic Mutegi from County Urban Planning department, Judges, magistrates, Lawyers, members from academia field, representatives from national government institutions and civil society groups.
