Nairobi County’s Built Environment and Urban Planning sector embarked on a capacity building exercise to equip the Settlement Executive Committees (SEC) and Grievance Redress Committees(GRC) of the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP II) on their roles and expectations ahead of the project’s ground breaking.
The weeklong exercise covered among other areas: -Roles and responsibilities of SEC, GRC members and County Community Officers; Communication channels and how to relay information to the community; Leadership skills, conflict identification, analysis and resolutions; Inclusivity, Gender awareness and sensitivity; Safety and Security awareness; Disaster preparedness and response planning; Working with different consultants
Facilitators of the training were drawn from the National project coordination Team-Gender and Community Engagement unit under the State Department of Housing and Urban Development, Nairobi County’s KISIP II Project Coordination team and Pamoja Trust.
The Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP) is a Government of Kenya project who’s jointly designed and funded by the World Bank, the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and the Agence Française de Development (AFD). The first phase of the project first phase (KISIP 1) was initiated in 2011 and ended in 2020.
The second phase – KISIP 11 began in March 2021.
The objective of the project is to improve the living conditions in selected informal settlements by enhancing security of tenure and improving infrastructure based on spatial plans developed in consultation with the community.
Component 1 of Nairobi County’s KISIP II Project, dubbed Integrated Settlement Upgrading (infrastructure upgrading) has a mandate to support infrastructure works and tenure regularization in Kahawa Soweto, Embakasi Village, Kayole Soweto and Kambi Moto settlement schemes.
Speaking during the exercise, KISIP II -National Coordination team, Gender and Community Engagement Head Ms. Gladys Juma stressed the need for team work but at the same time appreciating the boundaries laid down as far as roles and responsibilities were concerned for a seamless work flow.
Ms. Juma acknowledged the commitment of the participants as demonstrated in the numbers of the attendees.
Nairobi County’s KISIP II Project Coordinator Ms. Jecinta Charles in her remarks commended the National Project Coordination team for the support and guidance which had made it possible for the project to have come this far.
Ms. Charles thanked the community for their unity that had made it easy for Nairobi City County to make huge strides towards project implementation where ground breaking is expected in a few days’ time.
Nairobi County’s KISIP team was led by Ms. Jecinta Charles – County Project Coordinator flanked by Ms. Martha Muthoni -Deputy Coordinator KISIP II.
The National Project Coordination team – was led by Ms. Gladys Juma -KISIP II Head Gender and Community Engagement unit in the company of Shamsa Abdi -Head, Gender Based Violence and Justus Aungo-Consultant, KISIP Sociologist.
