Nairobi, 1st, November 2024
Nairobi City County Government’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Vocational Training Sub Sector, in collaboration with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Curriculum Development, Assessment, and Certification Council (TVET CDACC), successfully completed an impactful four-day Training of Trainers (TOT) program at the Dandora Greenlight Vocational Training Centre.
The program, which was held from October 28th to 31st, 2024, brought together 46 trainers from both public and private vocational training institutions within Nairobi County, including the renowned Beacon of Hope and MOHI Technical Training Institute. Trainers from neighbouring counties also participated, underlining the initiative’s broad influence and commitment to elevating vocational education standards.
The TOT program focused on Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) in preparation for the upcoming curriculum launch in January 2025. This aligns with the H.E the Governor Johnson Sakaja broader goal of equipping the workforce with practical, market-relevant skills that meet the demands of today’s job market.
Mr. Ahmed Abdi, Chief Officer for ECD and Vocational Training, extended his appreciation to the TVET CDACC facilitators for their expertise and commended the dedication of the trainers and the staff Dandora Greenlight. “We expect each of you to apply the knowledge you’ve gained here and share it with colleagues who were unable to attend,” he said. “This training empowers you to support students with essential skills through competency-based learning.”
Deputy Director of ECD and Vocational Training, Mr. Leonard Mititi, speaking to the Trainers, emphasized the importance of implementing these skills in vocational centres, encouraging trainers to drive tangible improvements, and foster innovation across training programs.
Ms. Caroline Nguli, Principal Greenlight Vocational Training Centre, highlighted the value of collaboration across institutions, emphasizing, “We look forward to future forums to share insights, address challenges, and strengthen vocational training in Nairobi.”
Facilitators Mr. Peter Kinyua Mwaura and Ms. Opany Awino Maureen from TVET CDACC led a comprehensive series of sessions on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET), covering key aspects of the upcoming curriculum, from program implementation to assessment methodologies and assessment tool development. Trainers participated in hands-on activities, creating session plans, e-portfolios, and tailored competency-based assessments for their trades. Q&A sessions allowed trainers to validate and present their assessment tools, equipping them to confidently assess and guide their trainees in real-world skill applications.
Reflecting on the training, participants expressed their appreciation for the support provided by TVET CDACC and the Nairobi County Government. “The training has equipped us with invaluable skills to prepare our trainees for today’s competitive job market,” shared Mr. Francis Muthee, Deputy Principal MOHI Technical Training Institute, adding, “We feel empowered and ready to contribute meaningfully to Nairobi’s workforce development.”
Following the training, each trainer will complete a final assessment to gain certification, marking a significant step in Nairobi’s commitment to competency-based education. The initiative embodies a transformative shift towards sustainable skills development, positioning Nairobi’s vocational training ecosystem for success with the new curriculum.
In attendance were Assistant Director Mr. Kepha Nyamwembe, Educational officer Mr. Clarence Momanyi.
