Nairobi County makes a significant step towards addressing air pollution

Nairobi County’s Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring Unit has commenced a process geared towards formulating Air Quality Data Action Plan with an aim to enhancing availability and use of air quality data, thus creating a robust and comprehensive environmental data ecosystem for the City County.

“In as much as the City has an Air quality Act of 2022, there is a need to operationalize the Act through formulation of air quality regulations, which we are currently drafting. Additionally, we have set up various air sensors across the City, hence the need to scale up the air quality data availability for the County and also scale up on the involvement of the public through awareness creation.” Stated Ms. Maureen Njeri, the County Executive Committee Member for Green Nairobi.

Ms. Njeri made the remarks during a meeting held between Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring Unit Officers and the Local Development Research Institute (LDRI) to chart way forward in the formulation of an Air Quality Data Action Plan for Nairobi City County; a crucial step towards addressing air pollution in Nairobi and creating a healthier environment for all residents.
Airpollsteps 4She appreciated the role played by several partners involved in supporting Nairobi County in the implementation of air quality management strategies in order to protect public health and the environment.

The County is also working on updating its Air Quality Action Plan after the lapse of the previous plan; Nairobi City County Air Quality Action Plan (2019-2023, a commitment towards improving the environment and health of residents of Nairobi.

Attending the meeting were; Mr. John Paul Malawi (Director Environment and Natural Resources), Mr. Maurice Kavai (Deputy Director Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring), Ms. Grace Ojiayo (Assistant Director Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring) and other Officers from the Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring Unit.
