2,500 trees planted at Mutuini Primary School to mitigate effects of climate change and conserve environment

Nairobi, 18th October 2024.

A total of 2,500 forestry and fruit tree seedlings from the County’s City Park nursery were planted yesterday at Mutuini Primary School during the launch of the school wildlife clubs tree growing initiative presided over by Nairobi City County Chief Officer for Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Ms. Gladwell Cheruiyot.

Ms. Cheruiyot stated that Nairobi County endeavors to not only plant trees but also nurture and grow them to maturity in order to mitigate effects of climate change and conserve the environment, thus creating a healthier environment in line with H.E Governor Sakaja’s vision of a greener City.
Treesplant 1“It is important for everyone to play their part in combating climate change and restoring nature. By planting trees and taking care of them, we can ensure a more sustainable future for the upcoming generations.” Said Ms. Cheruiyot.

The Agriculture Chief Officer thanked the school administration for availing a space for tree planting where a variety of tree species were planted. “We are ready to partner with all learning institutions to ensure there is green cover. We also plan to support the Dishi na County school feeding program by establishing vegetable gardens for sustainable supply of vegetables in schools.” She added.

The Head teacher, Mutuini Primary School Mr. George Njenga pledged that the school will put efforts to see the trees planted grow for a better environment.

The event also served as a platform for raising awareness about the importance of combating Climate change and restoring nature for future generations.

Mutuini Location Senior Chief Mr. Samson Kaindi promised that the Climate WorX team deployed in the area will work closely with the school administration to make sure all the trees planted survive. He encouraged people to plant more trees so as to mitigate effects of Climate Change and conservative the environment.
Treesplant 3The learners from both Mutuini Primary and Secondary schools also participated in the exercise with each planting a tree.

The event was accompanied by educational sessions by a team from Makele youth Foundation who made the tree growing more practical by demonstrating on drip irrigation technique using recycled plastic bottles; a technology that ensures less water is used for irrigating the trees.

Mr. Gabriel Ngale from Nairobi Conservation Education – Wildlife Clubs of Kenya said that the tree growing initiative aims at inspiring learners to take action in preserving the environment.

The event which was a partnership between Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Subsector and  Wildlife Clubs of Kenya brought together other players including, Dagoretti South Sub-County Environment team, climate worX, Mutuini Location Senior Chief, Makele youth Foundation, Miss Climate Kenya and Miss Kenya Forest Service 2023&2024. The area Member of the County Assembly was also represented.

Ms. Cheruiyot was accompanied by her Directors; Ms Mary Kibira ( Crops and Urban Forestry),  Ms. Winfred Katumo ( Food Systems), Ms. Jane Mogute ( Veterinary Services) and other Subsector Staff.
