Nairobi County Unveils TVET Course Application System Prototype in Partnership with Estonia’s Trinidad Wiseman

Nairobi, 10th October 2024

Nairobi County Smart Nairobi sub-sector received a prototype presentation of a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) course application system being developed by Trinidad Wiseman, a leading digital transformation company from Estonia, led by its team lead, Strategic Designer, Hellen Susan.

Chief Officer for Smart Nairobi, Wilson Gakuya, underscored the significance of the project, stating, “Expectations for this program are high, particularly because TVET activations are a critical part of Smart Nairobi’s mission to leverage technology for development.” He emphasized that the success of the county’s growth is tied to the implementation of Smart solutions, adding, “Smart solutions create visibility, which fosters accountability and enhance the efficiency of all systems within the county.”
Tvetsysytem 3Mr. Gakuya highlighted the necessity for the system to include strong feedback mechanisms, allowing for real-time tracking of interactions between institutions and trainees. These features will improve interactivity and ensure seamless integration as Nairobi County aims to maximize the utility and impact of its digital systems.

Additionally, Mr. Gakuya stressed the importance of ensuring smooth communication between TVET institutions and trainees. He recommended features such as the ability to download applications for later review and an interactive design to enhance the user experience. “The ultimate goal is to facilitate continuous communication from the application process through to post-enrollment support,” he stated.
Tvetsysytem 2Hellen Susan shared insights into the development of the TVET platform. “We visited three TVET Centres to fully understand the scope of TVET education. By engaging with principals and trainees, we gained an accurate picture of the current landscape. We will then test the prototype at these Centres and gather valuable feedback for improvements,” she explained.

The presentation showcased a dynamic course application system prototype aimed at transforming trainee access to TVET opportunities in Nairobi. The platform offers a seamless user experience, enabling prospective trainees to navigate easily through various TVET institutions, complete with detailed background information and a comprehensive catalogue of courses. This structured design addresses existing concerns about TVET education by providing a clear comparison of available opportunities and helping trainees appreciate the value of vocational education.

The prototype also incorporates engaging features such as video testimonials and social media integration, enhancing user interaction and building trust. These elements allow trainees to make informed decisions based on their personal interests and peer recommendations. The platform aims to empower trainees, streamline the application process, and position TVETs as a key pathway to career success within Smart Nairobi sub sectors’ vision.

The Trinidad Wiseman team thereafter visited Waithaka Vocational Training Centre and Ofafa Jericho Training Centre to test the TVET course application system with the trainees. Their interaction provided valuable insights, helping identify key areas for improvement to enhance the system’s efficiency and user experience.

Present was Paul Kiiru, Deputy Director e-Government, along with Smart Nairobi officers, and Leonard Mititi, Deputy Director of Vocational Training, who provided insights from the user sector’s perspective. Also in attendance was Clarence Momanyi, Education Officer, Christopher Waweru, Project Manager for e-Governance at the Estonian International Development Cooperation Centre (ESTDEV), Taavi Kirss, Software Developer from Trinidad Wiseman.
