Nairobi City County and Nairobi River commission held a three days’ sensitization workshop at Windsor Hotel.
During the workshop, Assistant Director Disaster Management Mr. Abdullahi M. Bonaya said “The importance of involving communities when making policies by enforcement institutions like NEMA, Water Resources and Nairobi River commission will help in case of disaster occurrence resolution”.
The agenda of the workshop was sensitization of stakeholders on Sewer and sanitation for the Nairobi River basin.
The forum was attended by state Government Administration, Nairobi City County Government, Water Resources Authority (WRA), Water Resources Management Authority(WARMA)Health Sectors, NEMA and Private Sectors.
The workshop developed a blueprint to guide the reclamation exercise for the Nairobi River basin. This is composed of three rivers, Mathare, Ngong and Nairobi River.
Ms. Eva Muhia the Nairobi River commissioner said, “The target of this sensitization is to bring on board state Government, Nairobi City County Government and None on State actors to come up with sustainable solutions on cleaning the Nairobi River”.
This exercise was conducted as a result of the directives from His Excellency the President to clean all Nairobi rivers and pave way for beautification of riparian lands within 100 days.
The recommendations of the sensitization workshop include: –
- Harmonize the Act and regulations on riparian lands: –
- Agricultural Act
- Water Act
- Surveyor Act
- Physical & land use planning and County Government Act.
- Water Resources Authority should enforce on effluent discharge permit conditions/Requirements.
- NEMA should enforce on environmental Impact Assessment.
- NEMA to enforce environmental Audit, technical team to participate in public participation.
The Water Resources Authority (WRA)adopted the riparian resources(30Meters) away in accordance to the executive order as a result of heavy flooding experience that caused loose of lives. Ends/..
