Nairobi’s Pivotal Role in Kenya’s Economy: 60% Stake in Co-operatives and 90% of MSEs Highlighted at USAID-Sponsored Workshop

Nairobi City County forms the foundation of Kenya’s economy, holding a 60% stake in the Co-operatives Sector and 90% of the country’s MSEs (Micro and Small Enterprises).

Speaking at a three-day training workshop for the Nairobi City County Cooperatives Sub-Sector Officers organized by Global Communities through the USAID funded Cooperative Leadership Engagement Advocacy and Research Plus (CLEAR Plus) project, Mr. Patrick Kilemi, Permanent Secretary from the State Department for Cooperatives, highlighted the importance of Nairobi’s role in the Cooperatives movement. He emphasized the need for investment to ensure proper running and management of cooperatives.
Usaidw Shop 1“The National Government is proud of the commitment by Governor Sakaja’s administration towards the cooperatives movement and making Nairobi a hub for collaborations with like-minded partners,” said Kilemi.

Global Communities, which works across sectors with local partners to build resilience, improve health, and increase access to economic opportunities, trained the Cooperatives Sub-Sector Officers on various topics including:

  • Cooperative Business Model
  • Public Policy and Policy Making Process for Cooperatives
  • Current and Future Trends in the Cooperative Sector
  • County Government Policy Trends and Practices
  • Kenya’s Cooperative Legislation Framework
  • Legal and Regulatory Framework
  • Introduction to Worker Cooperatives
  • Gender Equity and Good Governance

Usaidw Shop 5Dr. Anastasia Nyalita, Executive Member for Business and Hustler Opportunities, assured the Cooperative officers of Governor Sakaja’s support in ensuring they are well-equipped to carry out their duties and maintain Nairobi’s leading position in cooperative management within the country.”I am impressed by the show of support by the different government agencies who have offered their insights during this workshop,” Nyalita said. “These include Mr. Steve Otieno from the Office of the President’s Economic Transformation Secretariat (PETS), and Mr. Haron Ng’eno, Director of the Council of Governors’ Trade and Cooperative Committee.”
Usaidw Shop 2“With the new Chief Officer, Mr. George Musembi’s vast experience in both the banking and cooperatives sectors, I am confident that we have a strong team to achieve our set-out mandate and help our Governor make Nairobi a City of Opportunities for all, as envisioned in his manifesto,” Nyalita added.

The Cooperatives Sub-Sector Chief Officer Mr. George Musembi stated that the County will develop a policy tailored to its agenda once the National Assembly passes the Cooperatives Bill, which is currently up for its second reading.
