Green Nairobi’s Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Sub Sector with the support of Partnership for Africa Social and Governance Research (PASGR)- Utafiti Sera Food Systems Transformation House, engaged with internal and external stakeholders in reviewing Nairobi City County Urban and Peri Urban Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries (UPALF) Policy, 2015.
The policy was developed in 2015 for the purpose of promoting and regulating sustainable UPALF sector development to improve incomes, food security, create employment and reduce poverty to enhance living standards; with focus on sustainable and resilience, one health and environment.
Major activities for the day entailed outlining the policy questions and mapping out relevant evidence that would shape the policy response.
While addressing the meeting, the County Chief Officer Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Ms. Gladwell Cheruiyot reiterated the County Government’s commitment to formulating a policy that can work and positively impact the lives of Nairobi people. “As we work on reviewing the policy, we will need to look at food safety in terms of productivity to ensure safety measures are adhered to right from the production level.” Said Ms. Cheruiyot.
Dr. Pauline Ngimwa, Ag. Chief Executive Officer PASGR, said that besides collaborating with the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Subsector to produce inclusive policy that will improve food security and food safety in Nairobi County, the organization will also support the Subsector in areas of strengthening capacity and providing a space for all stakeholders to share knowledge on the emerging trends on the food system space including new technologies and transformation across the region.
The meeting which was a follow-up on group work in preparation for a third comprehensive policy review process convening scheduled for September, was attended by representatives from Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources, County legal team, representatives from County departments of Policy and Research, Trade and industry, Health department in charge of food safety, as well as representatives from National Government agencies and departments, research institutions, farmers unions, Civil society organizations, development partners and private sector among others.
