NAIROBI: 23rd August 2024
County Executive for Talent Skills Development and Care Brian Mulama has today presided over the official closing ceremony of the World Skills Kenya National Competition in Nairobi.
This year’s event has attracted over 130 competitors who competed for the top positions in 21 skill areas. The victors will represent the country in WorldSkills Africa, set to take place in Zambia. The event ran from Monday to Friday, 19th to 23rd August 2024. The theme of this year’s competition, “Moving TVET to the Top of the Global Agenda,” resonates deeply with the ongoing efforts to align our educational strategies with the demands of an ever-evolving world.
Competitions like this serve a purpose far greater than recognizing individual talent they are catalysts for societal change. Speaking at the event held at the Kenya School of TVET County Executive Mulama stated that by challenging our participants to address real-world problems, we are fostering a culture of innovation that extends beyond the confines of the classroom.
The County Executive said “These competitions empower young minds to push the boundaries of what is possible, turning theoretical knowledge into practical solutions that address the pressing issues of our time. Whether it’s in the fields of renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, or digital innovation, the skills and ideas generated here have the potential to reshape industries and improve lives. Moreover, by continually refining and improving existing solutions, we ensure that our nation remains competitive on a global scale.”
“It is through these experiences that we equip our youth not just with skills, but with the confidence and creativity needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. As they tackle these challenges, they learn to collaborate, to innovate, and most importantly, to envision a better future—qualities that are essential in the global workforce of tomorrow. Said Mulama.
Mr. Mulama disclosed that VTCs across our country produce approximately 25,000 skilled graduates who enter the job market, ready to contribute to our economy and society. However, as we stand on the cusp of greatness, it is crucial to acknowledge a gap that exists within our current framework. Vocational Training Centers (VTCs), which play a pivotal role in our national skills development landscape, have not been as prominently featured in this competition as they should be, this is a matter of concern.
The County Executive said Nairobi City County will be hosting a noteworthy event later this year—the TVET Day, scheduled for the 4th and 5th of December 2024. This event will be a milestone for our county and our nation, as it will bring together all stakeholders and partners in the TVET sector to engage in meaningful dialogue and chart a way forward for Vocational Education and Training.
He noted The TVET Day will be an opportunity for us to reflect on our achievements, identify challenges, and explore new opportunities for growth and collaboration. It will be a platform for sharing best practices, showcasing innovations, and building partnerships that will drive the TVET sector forward.
