Nairobi County Chief Officer Calls for Cross-Sector Collaboration to Address Food Security and Safety Challenges

Thursday 22nd August 2024

Nairobi City County’s Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Subsector Chief Officer Ms. Gladwell Cheruiyot has called for collaborative efforts between various County sectors in tackling food security and food safety concerns in the County.

Speaking during a workshop held in Machakos to review and finalize on Nairobi County Food Systems Strategy Monitoring and Evaluation Plan with internal stakeholders, Ms. Cheruiyot emphasized on the need for close collaboration with other relevant sectors in the ongoing implementation process of the Nairobi City County Food Systems Strategy (2022-2027), whose goal is to ensure affordable, accessible, safe and nutritious food for all Nairobi City residents.
Collabo 2” A lot needs to be done in implementing Nairobi Food Systems Strategy. We are currently working towards formulating a traceability policy for the purpose of tracing food from where it comes from until it reaches Nairobi as outlined in the Strategy. To achieve this, we need joint efforts with all relevant sectors.” She stated.

The Chief Officer appreciated Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) for supporting the two-day workshop and all the participants drawn from the Food & Agriculture Subsector, Markets, Trade, Public Participation, Urban Planning, Disaster Risk Reduction, Social Services, Environment, ICT, Wellness, Nutrition and School Feeding program and Nutrition departments, who have responsibilities outlined in the Food Systems Strategy implementation framework.
Collabo 3The County Director for Food Systems and Subsector programmes Ms. Rose Randall said creating synergies with other county sectors is critical. “We want to be well understood by other sectors and create synergy because when we talk about food, everyone is a stakeholder in ensuring food security and food safety.” She said.

During the meeting, the team also worked on developing a Nairobi Smart food and agriculture management system, which will be a one-stop shop with all information regarding the Subsector.
