County Chief Officer Wilson Gakuya Highlights GIS System’s Role in Boosting Revenue During Smart Nairobi Program Visit

The County Chief Officer for Smart Nairobi, Wilson Gakuya, today conducted a familiarization visit to several programs under the Smart Nairobi Sub Sector. The visit aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the capacities, opportunities, and possible gaps in the programs being implemented.

Mr. Gakuya began his visit at the Geographic Information System (GIS) office, where he inspected the server hosting the physical address system, which assigns unique physical addresses to properties. After reviewing the system, Mr. Gakuya emphasized that the GIS system should serve as the foundation for all departmental programs. He highlighted its potential to significantly enhance revenue collection for the county.
Smartnbivisit 3“Enhancing revenue collection is crucial to fulfilling the Governor’s promises to the people of Nairobi. Without adequate resources, these projects cannot be realized. The future of the county’s revenue mobilization lies significantly in the GIS system, which has the capacity to improve the County’s Own Source Revenue,” stated Mr. Gakuya.

He further remarked that automation is a key driver of revenue collection, and with the GIS system, Smart Nairobi is positioned to be a game-changer in helping the county achieve its revenue targets.
Smartnbivisit 11During his visit to the Customer Service Centre, Mr. Gakuya gained first-hand experience of the challenges and gaps in the system from his counterpart Chief Officer for Public Participation, Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Ms. Zipporah Mwangi. He explored potential solutions for tracking customer complaints and feedback mechanisms. He stressed the importance of a centralized system for managing customer concerns, ensuring citizen satisfaction. “Digitizing the process and obtaining metrics on complaints, as well as tracking customer concerns, will enable the County to better understand and meet the needs of its citizens,” he said.

Mr. Gakuya also visited the Nairobi County Data Centre, whose primary function is to provide a secure and controlled environment for storing, processing, managing, and distributing data and digital information. He acknowledged the Data Centre’s critical role in supporting a wide range of IT operations and services within the county.
Smartnbivisit 6Concluding his visit, Mr. Gakuya emphasized the importance of collaboration between Smart Nairobi and the ICT Infrastructure sub sectors. He assured continued support for staff from both sub-sectors to ensure they met their mandates.

Present were Director ICT Infrastructure, Truphena Ogonda, Deputy Directors ; E-government Paul Kiiru, Systems Security, Robert Okiri, Chief ICT Officer in charge of Data Centre,  Jeremy Wanyoike  among other Smart Nairobi and ICT Infrastructure officers.
