Green Nairobi Sector partnered with several stakeholders to host World Environment Day 2024 at City Park, Westlands Sub county.
The day’s activities included tree planting along Kibagare river in city park, showcasing best practices towards restoration of environment, presentation from participants and key note speeches from invited guests.
Pre event activities which included tree planting and clean ups took place in all sub counties with campaigns to drive actions towards restoration.
Speaking during the event, Green Nairobi County Executive Committee Member Mr Ibrahim Auma expressed his gratitude to the over 53 stakeholders involved in environmental conservation and for their participation in making the event successful. The partners and stakeholders included; Child Fund, JICA, Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), Danish Refugee Council, Hand in hand East Africa, KEPRO, Kenya Alliance of Residents Association, Religious Institutions, Safari Park Hotel, NEMA, Magnate Ventures, Learning Institutions, UN Habitat, Pacja, Community Based Organizations, Standard charted bank, Kenya Girl Guides Association, Kenya Defense Forces, National Youth Service, various Community Based Organisations, Taka Taka ni Mali among others.
While delivering his keynote speech, Mr. Auma called on citizens to commit to environmental conservation by taking preventive measures against global warming pollution and over exploitation to ensure the survival of current and future generations.
Calls from several speakers to preserve and protect the environment dominated the day’s event with citizens encouraged to take personal responsibility of taking care of environment.
To mark the day, learners from different schools joined the Green Nairobi CECM and other guests in cake cutting. The cake was donated by Safari Park Hotel.
Schools represented were; Providence academy, Statehouse Primary, Aga Khan primary, Visa Oshwal primary, Hospital Hill primary, Loresho primary, Mukuru primary, Martin Luther primary, St. Mary’s primary, Mwiki Secondary, St. Hannah’s secondary and Noonkopir girls secondary schools.
The World Environment Day is a global event led by UN Environment Programme which has been celebrated every 5th of June since 1973.
This year’s theme was accelerating land restoration, drought resilience and desertification.
