Green Nairobi CEC Ibrahim Auma Urges Citizens to Commit to Environmental Conservation at World Environment Day Celebration

Green Nairobi County Executive Committee Member Mr. Ibrahim Auma called on citizens to commit to environmental conservation by taking preventive measures against global warming, pollution and over exploitation to ensure the survival of current and future generations.

Mr. Auma spoke when he presided over the World Environment Day celebrations marked globally every 5th of June, at City Park.

“This year’s theme on ‘accelerating Land Restoration Drought resilience and Desertification’ reminds us all that land restoration is not just about reviving degraded ecosystems but also about protecting what is still intact, so that we don’t have to repeat the cycle of destruction and restoration. Let us be committed to jealously guard what is left” He said.

“World environment day is not just a day of celebration but a call to action. It’s a day to unite in our efforts to combat the environmental challenges that threaten our existence. This year’s theme highlights crucial call of addressing the degradation of our ecosystem.” Added the Green Nairobi County Executive.
Worldenvironday 1Mr. Auma encouraged serious collaborations in addressing the issues of encroachment on riparian reserves and wetlands.

He further urged for more conservative measures in reducing the use of artificial chemicals in agricultural activities which he said, would help protect land and the health of the people.

Mr. Auma stated that the county has made significant efforts in making the city cleaner, greener and more resilient to environmental degradation under the leadership of Nairobi Governor H.E Sakaja Johnson.” The Governor has recruited over 100 technical officers and 3500 support staff, ensuring that every corner of the city is well staffed and equipped to provide services to our citizens. This robust workforce is a testament to our commitment to maintaining a healthy environment for all.” Mr. Auma said.

The County Chief Officer Environment, Mr. Hibrahim Otieno thanked all environment stakeholders and partners for collaborating with the County in making the day successful. He also urged citizens to join hands with the County government in making the City green. “Until you dig a hole and plant a tree, you haven’t done anything.” He encouraged.
Worldenvironday 2Calls from several speakers to preserve and protect the environment dominated today’s event, with citizens encouraged to take personal responsibility of taking care of the environment.

To mark the Environment day, trees were planted along Kibagare River at City Park.

Several environmental stakeholders and Community Based organizations also showcased best practices towards restoration of environment.

The event was attended by Parklands and Karura Wards Members of the County Assembly, County staff from various sectors, National Government leaders, Heads of various Organizations, several environment stakeholders and learners from different schools.
