The Nairobi City County Liquor Board sensitizes the Sub County liquor committees in a bid to streamline regulation of Nairobi’s liquor industry.
Speaking at a capacity-building workshop for Sub County Liquor Committees held in Mombasa, Nairobi City County Deputy Governor, H.E. Njoroge Muchiri, emphasized the importance of adhering to the Public Officers Code of Conduct and Ethics. He stressed the value of ethical conduct as officers carry out their mandate through multi-sectoral collaborations.
“Our administration is dedicated to promoting responsible alcohol regulation and improving our licensing processes,” Deputy Governor Muchiri stated. “We are committed to creating a safer and more orderly environment.”
The Deputy Governor commended the Sub County Committees for their good work and pledged the administration’s full support to upscale revenue collection, which is essential for service delivery.
Ms. Maureen Njeri, the Business and Hustler Opportunities Executive Member, also spoke at the workshop. She outlined some of the roles of the Sub County Liquor Committees, which include public participation, recommendations for licensing of liquor outlets in the city, revocation of licenses and revenue enhancement ensuring due diligence in and adherence to provisions of the Act. The team was also taken through the customer service Charter which was recently finalized and the standard operating procedures for applications for licensing, inspections, recommendations and license issuance. Enforcement of liquor outlets to ensure regulation in as far as noise pollution, illicit brew outlets crackdown and other societal and environmental issues.
“As we play our part as a Board to ensure responsible drinking,” Ms. Njeri said, “the County has set up the first Sinai outpatient rehabilitation center in Viwandani, Makadara Sub County. This facility is fully operational, and plans are underway to establish another one in Mutuini.”
Mr. Mike Rabar the Board Chairman praised Governor Sakaja’s government for the strides made in how liquor businesses are operated in Nairobi and thanked the committees for the results witnessed through the amount of revenue generated through the Board.
The Committees received training on liquor fees and charges, gazetted zones for nightclubs, and the Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Act 2014.
Attendees included Hon. Clarence Munga, MCA for Kabiru Ward and Chairman of the Culture and Community Services Committee in the County Assembly. Additionally present were County Chief Officers: Ms. Zipporah Mwangi (Business and Hustler Opportunities), Mr. Tom Nyakaba (Public Health), Mr. Michael Kimani (Security and Compliance), Ms. Rhoda Otieno (Director of Liquor Licensing), Mr. Ogola (Director of Administration), Kelvin Ouma (Assistant Director of Liquor Licensing), Ms. Christine Kivuva (Assistant Director of Environment), and others.
