Nairobi County Steps Up Fight Against Alcohol Addiction with Free Rehabilitation and Support Programs

Saturday, May 25th, 2024

The Nairobi City County’s Liquor Board is committed to ensuring an alcohol addiction free City, a City of Order and Dignity, in line with Governor Johnson Sakaja’s manifesto.

While addressing a sensitization gathering at Karen Ward, the County Chief Officer for Business and Hustler Opportunities, Ms. Zipporah Mwangi, said that HE Governor Sakaja is committed to ensuring that his government supports persons suffering from alcohol addiction through provision of free rehabilitation services and provision of continuum of care which includes integrating them to the community and National building through linking them to different opportunities.

“We encourage responsible drinking,” Ms. Zipporah said. “It is our Governor’s wish to see Nairobi residents succeed and sober enough to take advantage of the soon-to-be-launched Biashara Stimulus Program that will create financing opportunities for existing businesses that lack finances to expand, at a single-digit, County-subsidized rate.”

The Director for Liquor licensing, Ms. Rhoda Otieno, commended the Karen Ward residents for their willingness to learn about the repercussions of alcohol abuse and how to avert the vice. Their large turnout and questions demonstrated their engagement.
Alchaddiction 2“As a government, it is our mandate to educate the masses on responsible alcohol consumption and regulate Liquor outlets,” Ms. Rhoda said. “This is cheaper than rehabilitating addicts, and we propose to hold sensitization Barazas across the County.”

The Members of the County Assembly present, led by the area MCA, Hon. Antony Maragu, congratulated Governor Sakaja and his administration for their endless efforts to ensure a future Nairobi that works, evidenced by the life-impacting laws taken to the County Assembly for approval.
Alchaddiction 6Present were Hon. Clarence Munga, the Kabiru Ward MCA and Chairman of the Culture and Community Services Committee in the County Assembly; Ms. Stellah Waruinge, the County Mental Health Director; Ms. Janet Kimeu, the Langata Sub-County Administrator; Mr. Kelvin Ouma, Assistant Director of Liquor; and members of the Langata Liquor licensing committee, among others.
