The Business and Hustler Opportunities sector has finalized a framework for establishing County Treatment and Rehabilitation Facilities for people dependent on alcohol.
Speaking in Mombasa after a five-day working retreat for a multi-sectoral team, Executive Member for Business and Hustler Opportunities Sector, Ms. Maureen Njeri, explained that the framework provides guidelines for developing rehab centers. These centers will be run by the Nairobi County Liquor Board in collaboration with other county sectors, including Health, Social Services, and Youth.
“Several models/options for establishing these rehabilitation centers were considered,” said Ms. Njeri. “These included standalone outpatient and inpatient treatment centers as well as integrating rehabilitation services within existing health facilities. Resource mobilization from willing donor institutions, state and non-state actors, was also considered a key component in the framework to ensure the centers’ sustainability.”
Ms. Njeri further explained that the framework aims to ensure the established facilities are well-sustained for effective and efficient service delivery.
The Chief Officer for Business and Hustler Opportunities Sub Sector, Ms. Zipporah Mwangi, also speaking at the event, said Nairobi County has so far established one rehabilitation facility at Sinai Village in Makadara Sub-county. The facility has served over 700 patients since September 2023. This highlights the significant number of people in the County affected by alcoholism, emphasizing the urgent need for more affordable rehabilitation facilities across the city.
Also present were: Director of Liquor Licensing, Ms. Rhoda Otieno; Director of Medical Services, Dr. Carol Ngunu; Nairobi County Liquor Board members; and other County staff.
