Nairobi City County Executive Committee Member for Green Nairobi Mr. Ibrahim Auma has asserted City County’s dedication in driving agro entrepreneurship through boosting and supporting agricultural activities in Nairobi in line with Governor Sakaja’s vision of a food secure County.
Mr. Auma was speaking when he visited Kenya’s best farmers, Mr. David Wamae and Mrs. Maryann Wamae at Karen, Langata Sub County. The visit aimed at appreciating farmers and getting to know the challenges facing them.
Mr. and Mrs. Wamae, the owners of Rhino Park Dairy Resource Centre were ranked best farmer Countrywide in the category of Small Scale farmer fully commercialized, during 2023 Nairobi International Trade Fair. They own 16 dairy cows which produces about 250 litres of milk daily.
The win came from enormous work the County Agriculture Subsector is doing in supporting urban farmers with an aim of addressing food and nutrition security and well as creation of jobs through agribusiness.
Mr. Auma expressed confidence that soon Nairobi farmers and residents will start appreciating the many efforts the county is putting in place in ensuring safe, affordable and nutritious food for all.
“Nairobi is already in talks with other counties who supply foodstuffs into the City, an initiative aimed at making sure that food reaching Nairobi is fresh, safe and nutritious, and also looking for ways to create linkages amongst producers, processors and consumers.” He added.
The Wamaes are among the many farmers who have benefited from Nairobi city County Government. The County through Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme ( ASDSP) 11 supported them together with Muteero self-help group with equipment such as Ice cream making machine, cream separator, milk pasteurizer, milk cooler, milk analyzer and a chiller to boost in their dairy products business
Besides innovation support, the County has also trained the value chain actors on Technologies, Innovations and Management Practices (TIMPs), entrepreneurship and market access.
Mr. And Mrs. Wamae who specializes in dairy farming and milk value addition, said there is need to encourage youth to venture into agribusiness adding that agriculture pays.
The County Executive was accompanied by Director Crops and Forestry Development Ms. Mary Kibira, Deputy Director and ASDSP Business Development Officer Mr. David Kyalo and Mr. Philemon Lagat, ASDSP Monitoring and Evaluation Officer.
