Nairobi County Environment Department has kicked off preparations for this year’s World Environment Day celebrations to be held on 5th June, at City Park.
This year, the focus is on land restoration, desertification and drought resistance. The Campaign Promoting Restoration Activities in the City is led by the Director Environment Mr. J.P Malawi who is the chair for the planning committee.
Today, the department held a meeting with relevant stakeholders to deliberate on the event budget, pre-event activities and activities for the main event.
This meeting was chaired by Ms. Christine Kivuva, Assistant Director Environmental Monitoring Compliance and Enforcement.
Ms. Christine said the department looks forward to working with all relevant stakeholders to make the day a success.
“As part of pre-event activities, the County has in partnership with Voluntary Service Oversees – Waste to Work Project organized a Business Forum meeting with young green entrepreneurs in waste sector next month, with an aim to providing a platform for interaction between green entrepreneurs in waste value chain, communities, authorities and the private sector to scale up their green enterprises.” Said Ms. Christine.
Other pre event activities will include tree planting and clean-ups in all sub counties.
National Environment Management Authority (NEMA),Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility (KEPRO), Hand in Hand- East Africa, Child Fund and UN-Habitat were part of the stakeholders who attended today’s planning meeting.
Other organizations who have also confirmed participation includes; Coca Cola Company, World Vision, Shofco and Community Based organizations across Sub counties.
The meeting was also attended by the Environment Officers, Security and Compliance Officers to assist in the planning of the event.
