Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Engages County Leaders to Drive Forward 2024/2025 Budget Discussions: Focus on Sustainable Development Goals and Improved Service Delivery

Nairobi City County Executive, County Assembly Sectoral Committee on Water and Sanitation and Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company held discussions on the company’s 2024/2025 budget which is a key driver of its operations.

The meeting provided insights on the company’s income and expenditure, current achievements, opportunities, challenges and future plans as well as other matters that contribute towards the execution and delivery of Water and Sewerage services.

“It is important that we recognize the enormous responsibility that rests on each one of us where our water company’s future is concerned and more so, as we work towards accelerating the achievement of Sustainable  Development Goal Six(SDG)6 which defines access to water and sanitation for all and vision 2030 coupled with the County Government’s manifesto.” Stated Green Nairobi Executive Committee Member for Green Nairobi, Mr. Ibrahim Auma.
Watercomittee Assemby1Mr. Auma expressed his satisfaction on the management of the company led by Managing Director Eng. Nahason Muguna which he said has seen the roll out of several engagements lately with a view of channeling out solutions to reach the set targets under the signed performance contract with the County.

The Green Nairobi Executive also commended the Board for its leadership in making the budget process all-inclusive by ensuring adequate internal stakeholder participation.

“Such a process enriches the budgets when the very valuable deliberations and inputs are taken into account. This way we are able to understand why a project is proposed for location A and not B, and vice versa. Together we have achieved great things. I assure you of the County support with the leadership of H.E Governor Sakaja as we continue to take steps towards greater possibilities of improving the customers experience and making this city a place to live with dignity.” Remarked Mr. Auma.

Nahason Muguna, Managing Director Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company appreciated the leadership and support provided by Nairobi County saying the support has empowered the Company to embrace Governor Sakaja’s challenge of a City of Order, Dignity, Hope and Opportunities for all, as envisioned in the County manifesto as well as Water and Sanitation goals outlined in the 2023-2028 County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP).

“Deliberate concerted efforts have been employed to upscale operational efficiency in the provision of water and sewerage services.” Said Eng. Muguna.

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company MD highlighted some of the strategies the company plans to employ in order to meet the targets set such as revenue growth through equitable distribution of water, robust debt recovery framework, and sustained efforts towards reduction of Non-Revenue Water, targeted staff development initiatives, growing the customer experience and practicing sound financial discipline.
Watercomittee Assemby9“Currently we anticipate a growth in revenue of 10.86 billion for the FY 2023/2024 and we project revenue of 17.12 billion drawn from collections, customer deposits and other sources of income which translates to a projected increase of 58%.” Eng. Muguna told the meeting.

The Chairperson, Sectoral Committee on Water and Sanitation and MCA Ngei Ward Hon. Redson Otieno, asked NCWSC to forward Water and Sewerage policies, bills and regulations to be considered and passed by the Assembly for the benefit of Nairobians.

Hon. Otieno reiterated the Water and Sanitation Committee support and cooperation towards consideration of the NCWSC annual budget 2024-2025 for the benefits of the Nairobi residents. “This will be attained by ensuring that we play our representative and legislation role responsibly.” He added.

The meeting was attended by Water and Sanitation Subsector Heads, senior Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company officers, Green Nairobi Sector Budgets Officer and Green Nairobi Sector Working Group Chairperson.
