Nairobi City County Veterinary Services Directorate teamed up with TNR Trust and other partners for free dogs and cats rabies vaccination and sterilization program at Mutuini, Dagoretti South Sub County.
154 dogs and cats were vaccinated against rabies and 30 of them neutered.
Mr. Ibrahim Auma, the County Executive for Green Nairobi who was present termed the exercise a noble idea which will be escalated to all other Sub Counties of Nairobi.
“The current administration of H.E Governor Sakaja is dedicated to partner with all animal welfare stakeholders to eliminate rabies in Nairobi County.” He added.
Mr. Auma also welcomed stakeholders to partner with the County in carrying out census of all animals in the City. He noted that the census data together with the Animal Welfare and Control bill recently passed at the County’s Apex committee meeting, and the Nairobi City County Dog Control and Welfare Act will be of help to the county and other stakeholders in managing the welfare of animals in the county.
The vaccination campaign at Mutuini was initiated by a 15 year old Nina Ng’ang’a, a grade 10 student at Aga Khan School with an aim of eradicating rabies in the Sub County.
Other partners were ILRI, University of Nairobi, Drop Access Limited, The Kenya Veterinary Association and Pestore Kenya.
The County Executive was accompanied by County Deputy Director Veterinary Services Mr. David Kyalo.
