As the World marked the Toilet Day celebrations on 19th November, the Nairobi County Executive Member for Green Nairobi Ms. Maureen Njeri said that Nairobi County government recognizes the significance of proper sanitation practices and the need for all residents to have access to clean and safe toilets.
“As we gather here to commemorate World Toilet Day, it is important for us to reflect on the crucial role that toilets play in ensuring sanitation and hygiene for all. Access to clean and safe toilets is a basic human right, and it is essential for promoting public health and wellbeing in our communities.” Added Ms. Njeri.
Ms. Njeri was speaking at Nyayo Highrise, Langata Sub County, where the World Toilet Day celebrations event was held. The day is celebrated annually on November 19th to raise awareness about the importance of Sanitation and toilets.
This year’s theme was Toilet for Peace, highlighting the impact that sanitation has on overall wellbeing and quality of life.
Ms. Njeri reported that the County plans to construct more ablution blocks in the informal settlements as well as provide water tanks with an aim to provide residents with access to safe and hygienic facilities.
“It is our responsibility as a County government to ensure that public toilets are well maintained, accessible and hygienic for all those who rely on them.” Stated the CECM.
Additionally, Ms. Njeri urged the community and other stakeholders to join hands with the County in promoting proper sanitation practices, advocating for improved toilet facilities and raising awareness about the importance of toilets people’s daily lives.
The County Director for Water and Sanitation Services Mr. Mario Kainga noted that access to clean and safe toilets was a basic human right, adding that it was encouraging to see the efforts being recognized and celebrated.
The event which was graced by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Engineer Erick Mugaa and also attended by Nairobi River commission led by their Chair Person Hon. Bishop Margaret Wanjiru culminated with recognition of the outstanding contributors to sanitation efforts.
Attending the event were various community groups, Nairobi County Water and Sanitation Subsector staff, private sector, Non-Governmental organizations, and several governments agencies.
