Vocational Training Board Hosts Inaugural Capacity building Workshop to Enhance Service Delivery and Implement Governor Sakaja’s Manifesto

NAIROBI: 29th July 2024

The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) successfully conducted a capacity building workshop for Board of Governor’s and Managers of Vocational Training Centers (VTCs) from Nairobi city and Kiambu Counties. The workshop, held from 22nd to 26th July 2024, aimed to strengthen the quality of leadership, governance, and management of VTCs.

Speaking at the Closing ceremony County Executive for Talent Skills Development and Care Rosemary Kariuki said “Vocational training centers are the backbone of our strategy to equip our youth with practical skills that align with the needs of our dynamic job market. These centers play a vital role in driving economic development and reducing unemployment. By imparting technical skills, VTCs help to bridge the gap between education and employment, ensuring our youth are job-ready and capable of contributing to our county’s and nation’s growth.”

She said Nairobi County’s primary objectives are to enhance governance, improve strategic planning, and optimize resource management within our training centers. “Good governance and effective management are essential for the success of our institutions and for delivering high-quality education and training to our students.”

The County Executive reaffirmed the commitment of Nairobi County government for vocational training to improving the infrastructure, increasing funding, and providing the necessary resources to ensure the VTCs operate at their best. “Initiatives are already in place, and more are in the pipeline, aimed at elevating the standards of our vocational training centers.”

The County Executive also acknowledged the existing gaps in human resources, particularly the need for more qualified trainers, and expressed a commitment to addressing these challenges. She appreciated the partners for their continued support and dedication to improving vocational education.

This workshop marks a significant step forward in our collective efforts to build a robust and inclusive vocational training system that meets the needs of our society. The collaboration between Nairobi and Kiambu Counties has set a precedent for future partnerships aimed at elevating the standards of vocational education in Kenya.

The comprehensive program included sessions on effective leadership, governance, management practices, and strategies to promote inclusive vocational training. The workshop was attended by 100 board members, 50 Principals / Managers and 6 VET officers. This structure ensured that all participants received focused and relevant training tailored to their specific roles and responsibilities within the VTCs.

The workshop was organized in collaboration with No One Out Italy-Kenya, Girl Child Network, COWA Kenya, and The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.

The County Executive was accompanied by Deputy Directors Leonard Mititi and Dr. Esther Kimani, representatives from Kiambu County among others.
