Nairobi City County Executive Committee Member for Mobility and Works Mr. Ibrahim Auma alongside the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Dr. Andrew Kiplagat today engaged Boda Boda SACCO leadership at Green Park Terminus in a transformative meeting aimed at streamlining operations and fostering safer, orderly and smarter transport solutions for the vibrant City of Nairobi.
” With over 4000 riders navigating the City of Nairobi daily, it is time to bring structure to this essential sector.” Noted Mr. Auma.
The Mobility and Works CEC Member outlined several measures the County is undertaking in reshaping the Boda Boda industry including stakeholders’ engagement scheduled for this month with an aim to finalize regulations guiding Boda Boda operations in line with NTSA regulations and the County laws.
In addition, Mr. Auma said that the County is working together with NTSA in mapping pick- up and drop – off points to mark out safe and regulated spaces across the City in order to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Already the upper Central Business District (CBD) is fully mapped while the lower CBD is next in line.
Other measures include registration of transport SACCOs which is currently underway, an exercise contacted in collaboration with NTSA to ensure compliance and accountability. ” We shall also have a unique color-coded reflector for each SACCO zone to make riders easily identifiable and enhance order in our roads.” Added the Mobility and Works Boss.
According to Mr. Auma, the SACCOS will be empowered to self- regulate, with management oversight at each stage. Additionally, every rider will be expected to have a registered membership with approved slots to ensure orderly operations.
“We are determined to eliminate reckless riding, ensure all riders wear safety gear and enforce compliance across all operations. Nairobi deserves a safe, efficient and orderly transport systems. With the collaboration of Boda Boda operators, we are steering towards that goal.” Said Mr. Auma.
