Transformative Vision: Nairobi City County Unveils Ambitious Plan to Construct 10 Modern Markets in 2023/24 FY for a City of Order, Dignity, Hope, and Opportunities for all.

The Nairobi City County Business and Hustler Opportunities Markets Sub Sector sets out an ambitious plan to construct a total of 10 (ten) markets in the 2023/24 financial year, in its quest to make Nairobi a City of Order, Dignity, Hope and Opportunities for all.

Speaking during a tour of Mutuini and Karen proposed market sites that will be the first markets to be constructed in phase 1 of this program, the County Executive Member for Business and Hustler Opportunities Ms. Maureen Njeri said one of the flagship programs of H.E the Governor is construction of 20 modern markets in various Sub Counties.
10markets14Said Maureen,” Mutuini market will be the first of its kind as it will integrate both wholesale and retail sections and will accommodate a total of 366 traders in the retail section and all the new markets will have the wash centers for food, day care and nursing units, cold storage, underground tanks, ample parking and boreholes and a material recovery facility (MRF) to enhance a circular economy on waste management with segregation at source being paramount.”
10markets3Added Maureen, “The Karen market will also be a multi storey business hub that will accommodate approximately 528 traders maximizing on space and we will transform it into a green market with sufficient green spaces, energy efficiency with provisions for solar energy, material recovery facility (MRF) for sustainable solid waste management and social amenities such as tennis courts to offer a recreational venue for the community as a social responsibility by the County.”

Development of these markets is in line with creating a city of order, dignity, hope and opportunities for all.
10markets5Also present was the County Chief Officer for markets and Trade who highlighted that the markets will create employment for thousands of people while ensuring traders get decent and conducive environment to operate in.

Also present was Mutuini Ward MCA, Hon. Martin Mbugua, the Director Markets Ms. Joyce Kyengo, Deputy Director Markets Ms. Serah Gichamba and Architect Eng. Stellah Marinda.
