Restoring Nairobi’s Rivers in order to improve quality of life for residents and promote sustainable development

Nairobi,5th June 2025

Green Nairobi Executive Committee Member Ms. Maureen Njeri led a multiagency delegation for a joint site visit along a section of Nairobi river adjacent to the Dandora dumpsite, as part of the ongoing efforts to restore Nairobi River, under the Nairobi River Regeneration and Engineering Works Programme.

Key highlight of the visit was to identify the riparian area available for the planned infrastructure upgrade for sewer installation, greenway and the leachate treatment facility to be installed within this section. The leachate treatment facility coupled with establishment of green spaces along this stretch is expected to significantly reduce pollution of the nearby river from the dumpsite, contributing to the broader ecological restoration of the river basin.
Restorenrb 5“This marks another milestone in the collaborative, multi-agency approach to restoring Nairobi’s rivers and improving urban resilience through sustainable environmental engineering.” Remarked Ms. Njeri.

The Nairobi River Regeneration and Engineering Works Programme is a comprehensive project launched early this year, with an aim to revitalize Nairobi’s rivers into vibrant waterfronts.

The project seeks to improve the quality of life for the residents by reclaiming the river as a shared public good, enhancing biodiversity and providing sustainable water resource.

The visit culminated at the Dandora falls which will be an iconic site once the river rehabilitation works are complete. The visit was undertaken by officers from the Nairobi City County Government, Nairobi Rivers Commission, the Department of Defense and representatives from the Chinese Contractor CEEC. Also present during the visit were Green Nairobi staff – Deputy Director and Assistant Director Final Disposal, Walter Omwenga and Robinson Michael, Deputy Director Parks and Natural resources, Susan Nyambura and Mobility &Works Officers – Eng. Wamugunda and Surveyors from the Survey of Kenya and the Built Environment Sector in the County.
