Nairobi to Host 3rd Clean Air Forum in 2025, Announces Green Nairobi CECM Ibrahim Auma at Lagos Forum

Nairobi City County Executive Committee Member for Green Nairobi Mr. Ibrahim Auma announced that Nairobi City will be hosting the 3rd Clean Air Forum in 2025.

Mr. Auma spoke when he attended Clean Air Forum 2024 in Lagos Nigeria, accompanied by Director Environment Mr. John Paul Malawi, Deputy Director Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring Mr. Maurice Kavai and Assistant Director Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring Ms. Grace Ojiayo.

In his key note speech, Mr. Auma shared insights, case studies and innovative solutions Nairobi has put in place in tackling air pollution in order to improve public health.

” Nairobi has made significant strides with initiatives like Air Quality Monitoring, dedicated budgets, technical staff to the ward level, and an air quality legislative framework to complement partners’ efforts” Said Mr. Auma.

The Green Nairobi CECM also mentioned that the City government is working towards formalization of Nairobi Air Quality Working Group ( N-Air) which is co- chaired by the Nairobi City County Government and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) bringing together representatives from various sectors to foster a robust Community of practice that shares knowledge, expertise, and resources to advance air quality improvements in Nairobi.

On clean cooking, Mr. Auma explained that Nairobi County is partnering with UNDP on the Accelerating Clean Cooking Action Project, and currently in the process of distributing bioethanol cook stoves to 2,000 vulnerable families in the city. “This initiative aims to improve air quality and health by promoting cleaner cooking fuels. We invite more partners to join us in expanding this effort”. He added.

In addition, the Green Nairobi Executive Committee Member said that the county is teaming up with national agencies through N-Air to address transport emissions.

Mr. Auma also said that Nairobi is dedicated to intercity cooperation, multi-stakeholder engagement, and the development of legal frameworks for air quality management.

In an endeavor to ensure air quality management, the CECM pointed out that Nairobi through collaborative efforts has been able to benefit from programs like:             C40 Cities Clean Air for Africa, Clean Air Fund Breathe Cities Project, Clean Air Catalyst by WRI and currently working to partnering with VSO on Waste to Work Project.
