Nairobi hosts technical workshop to strengthen air quality management

Nairobi, 22nd February 2026

The Nairobi City County Government, in partnership with the Environmental Compliance Institute (ECI) and the Clean Air Fund under the Breathe Cities initiative, held a four day technical workshop from 17th to 20th February, aimed at strengthening air quality management across the city.

The initiative, supported by the Clean Air Fund through the Breathe Cities Programme, is part of ongoing efforts to address air pollution challenges in Nairobi. It builds on recent milestones, including the transition of coordination of the Nairobi Air Quality Working Group (N-Air) to the County Government, as well as the rollout of the Nairobi City County Air Quality Action Plan (2025–2029) and the City-owned Air Quality Data Management System.

Among the participants were Borough Managers and Sub County Administrators, who play a critical role in the implementation of air quality interventions at the Sub county level.

“We have begun a long term partnership with the Borough Managers, who will play a key role in the implementation of the Air Quality Action Plan,” said Mr Maurice Kavai, Deputy Director for Climate Change and Air Quality Monitoring.

County Chief Officer for Boroughs and Sub-County Administration, Mr Bernard Kiala, welcomed the onboarding of Borough Managers into the implementation process, stating that they will work closely with the Climate Change Unit to achieve cleaner air for Nairobi residents.

Executive Director of the Environmental Compliance Institute, Mr. Gerphas Opondo, said the forum provided a platform for technical officers and stakeholders to exchange knowledge and strengthen capacity in enforcing air quality regulations. He assured of the Institute’s commitment to continue supporting the County in advancing air quality management initiatives.

Discussions during the workshop focused on practical approaches to strengthening monitoring networks and enhancing data driven decision making in tackling air pollution.

Participants drawn from various departments within the County and National Government, regulatory bodies, grassroots organizations, and partner institutions actively contributed to strategies aimed at improving compliance and promoting cleaner air for Nairobi residents.

Mr Kavai said that the Action Plan which was approved by the cabinet and recently launched, aligns with H.E Governor Sakaja’s manifesto of making Nairobi a liveable city. He attributed the air quality successes to the Green Nairobi leadership, appreciating the stewardship of County Executive Committee Member Ms. Maureen Njeri, the Chief Officer Mr Hibrahim Otieno and the Director Mr JP Malawi.

He also lauded the Clean Air Fund and the Environmental Compliance Institute for their continued support to the City’s clean air agenda.

“The County is ready to take the next steps in addressing air quality issues. I encourage all participants to fully engage with the Air Quality Action Plan to ensure smooth and effective implementation. “He added.

At the end of the intensive workshop, participants were awarded certificates in recognition of their participation.
