Nairobi Hosts 2nd Edition Of Africa Smart Cities Investment Summit

H.E. Governor Johnson Sakaja, accompanied by his Deputy Njoroge Muchiri, officially inaugurated the 2nd edition of the Africa Smart Cities Investment Summit (ASCIS) under the theme “Unleashing the AI City.” The event, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, brought together global experts, policymakers, investors, and innovators to explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in driving sustainable urban development across Africa.

The Governor underscored Nairobi County’s remarkable progress in digitization, emphasizing its transformative impact on governance and revenue collection. “Through digitization, we have achieved a record revenue collection of Kes.12.8B. The introduction of unified business permits and cashless payment systems, such as Nairobi Pay, has significantly improved service delivery and transparency,” he stated.
Smartcities 5He also stressed the importance of robust data legislation. “We must prioritize laws that empower individuals to have control over their data while ensuring inclusivity as digital connectivity becomes integral to daily life. Our commitment is clear. We will bridge the digital divide by establishing ICT hubs in every ward to ensure internet access for all Kenyans,” he affirmed.

Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri stated that Nairobi stands at the crossroads of innovation and boundless opportunity, a city poised to redefine its identity and chart a transformative path for its people. As the economic heartbeat of Kenya and a hub for regional and international business, Nairobi requires visionary leadership leaders who not only recognize its immense potential but also have the determination to harness it.
Smartcities 7He said, “Our city’s future lies in embracing its role as a thriving corporate and economic powerhouse while ensuring inclusivity and sustainable growth. We celebrate having a leader, chosen by the people whose vision and dedication reflect the aspirations of every Nairobian. Together, under this leadership, we can shape a Nairobi that is innovative, prosperous, and truly representative of the vibrant spirit of its citizens. ”

The Summit underscores the critical role of leadership, innovation, and collaboration in shaping the future of African cities as well as delivering a resounding call to action to redefine Africa’s urban landscape through the power of technology and strategic partnerships.

Michal Mlynár, Deputy Executive Director of UN-Habitat, emphasized the importance of smart cities prioritizing sustainability, inclusivity, and human rights. He advocated for equitable access to technology and AI governance to enhance urban mobility and improve the quality of life. “Smart cities are crucial for shaping the future of urban spaces. Cities must prioritize sustainability, inclusivity, and human rights to effectively serve their people,” he stated.
Smartcities 6The plenary discussions set the tone for impactful discussions, positioning smart cities as vital tools for addressing urban challenges while promoting sustainability and inclusivity. It emphasized the importance of shared learning, innovation, and multi-stakeholder collaboration in building cities that are not only smarter but also more resilient and equitable for all.

As the three day summit unfolds, it aims to set the stage for actionable partnerships and investment commitments that will transform cities into smart, sustainable ecosystems. The discussions are expected to lay a roadmap for leveraging AI to create inclusive, equitable, and resilient urban environments that meet the needs of Africa’s rapidly growing urban populations.

Key stakeholders in attendance include city mayors, urban planners, private investors, and representatives from global technology firms.
