Nairobi County Vocational Training Centres hold Stakeholders Breakfast Meeting on Future Plans for Vocational Training

NAIROBI: 12th Friday July 2024

Waithaka Vocational Training Center hosted stakeholders’ breakfast meeting to discuss the future plans for Vocational Training in Nairobi County.

Nairobi County boasts 11 no. Vocational training institutions that have been instrumental in equipping our youth with practical skills. However, we must acknowledge the challenges we face—outdated tools and equipment, inadequate funding, and a lack of alignment with industry needs. These gaps hinder our progress and limit the potential of our young people.

Mr. Leonard Mititi, Deputy Director for Vocational Training, said vocational training plays a critical role in addressing unemployment and fostering economic development. Our vocational training institutions are the bedrock upon which we can build a skilled and adaptable workforce, ready to meet the demands of an ever-evolving job market.

The Vision of Nairobi County Vocational Training aim is to transform our vocational training landscape, making it more responsive, inclusive, and aligned with the demands of the modern economy. Our objectives are clear: to modernize our training programs, increase accessibility, and foster strong partnerships with industry stakeholders.

Mr. Kefa Omanga Director Stakeholder Engagement and Donor Coordination said Policy Framework, Funding and Resource Mobilization, Stakeholder Engagement,

Pilot Programs, Monitoring and evaluation are some of the recommendations by the stakeholders. Turning these recommendations into reality requires well-defined implementation strategies, we will formulate and enact policies that support the enhancements we seek. A dedicated task force will oversee the implementation of these recommendations.”

Mr. Mititi said the future of Vocational Training in Nairobi County is bright, but it requires our concerted effort and commitment. We can equip our youth with the skills needed to thrive in a dynamic economy, contributing to the county’s sustainable development. He pledged the ongoing support and called upon more partners to join the transformative journey.

To achieve this vision, the stakeholders made several recommendations:-

Curriculum Modernization – We must update our curricula to include digital skills, emerging technologies, and industry-specific competencies. Soft skills training such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving must become integral parts of our programs. Regular reviews and updates are essential to keep pace with industry changes. Industry Collaboration, Infrastructure and Resources, Accessibility, Inclusivity and Quality Assurance.

To ensure the recommendations of the meeting are implemented the stakeholders came up with a “Nairobi City County Vocational Education & Training Working Group” to coordinate the formulation and implementation of strategies to revolutionize the Vocational Training in the county.

Present were 35no. of stakeholders, Assistant Directors Kepha Nyamwembe and Susan Kamau, Vocational Training Education Officer Clarence Momanyi, Caroline Nguli Principal Dandora Greenlight VTC and principals from the Vocational Training Centers.
