Nairobi, 4th December 2025
Nairobi City County’s Executive Committee Member for Mobility and Works, Mr. Ibrahim Auma, yesterday joined senior officials from the State Department for Energy to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with a powerful message of inclusion and dignity.
The leaders celebrated the Day in style by issuing clean cooking solutions which included cooking gas cylinders and electric pressure cookers to selected persons with disabilities, symbolizing a commitment to an inclusive energy transition and a better quality of life for all.
This year’s global theme was Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.
“As we commemorate this day, we confront a reality. Indoor air pollution from traditional cooking methods continues to undermine the health and safety of thousands. Clean cooking is therefore not simply an energy issue, but a justice, equity and human rights issue.” Said Mr. Auma.
The Mobility and Works CECM observed that the deliberate effort to prioritize persons with disabilities in the clean energy transition is not only necessary but overdue. Mr. Auma noted that many Kenyan households still rely on charcoal, firewood and kerosene, methods whose smoke and emissions are silent drivers of respiratory diseases such as asthma and pneumonia, as well as heart conditions and eye complications.
“These impacts are even more severe for persons with disabilities, many of whom spend more time indoors, increasing their exposure. Clean cooking reduces the risks associated with traditional fuels. This means safer homes, improved respiratory and cardiovascular health, fewer accidents, and ultimately a better quality of life.” He added.
Mr. Auma affirmed Nairobi County’s commitment to continue working closely with the National Government, disability organizations and community partners to ensure clean energy solutions reach those who need them most.
