Nairobi, 1st May 2026
Nairobi City County is scaling up efforts to enhance environmental management and climate resilience through a strengthened multiagency approach under the Climate Worx programme, set to commence on Monday, 4th May 2026.
A planning meeting chaired by the County Executive Committee Member for Green Nairobi, Ms. Maureen Njeri yesterday set out a joint framework for implementation and oversight of the program, outlining a coordinative path towards attaining a clean and health city.
Participants included representatives from the Nairobi Rivers Commission, National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), National Youth Service (NYS), Borough Managers, Sub-County Administrators, and Sub-County Environment Officers from all 17 sub-counties.
The meeting agreed on the full integration of Climate Worx teams into the county’s routine citywide cleaning operations. The teams will complement existing efforts by supporting street sweeping, drainage unclogging, vegetation management, litter collection, and waste handling to facilitate efficient disposal.
To strengthen accountability and coordination at the sub-county level, County Commissioners and Deputy County Commissioners will oversee workforce attendance and chair sub-county Climate Worx implementation committee meetings every fortnight to review progress and deployment status.
Operational oversight and supervision will be anchored under the Nairobi City County Government with NYS providing additional on ground supervision for assigned cohorts.
The County Government, in collaboration with the Nairobi Rivers Commission through NYS, will ensure the provision of trucks to support timely waste collection and transportation.
To address illegal dumping, sub-counties will establish dedicated anti-dumping units comprising multi-agency teams, including the National Police Service and NGAOs, to enhance enforcement and compliance.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, Brigadier Joseph Muracia, noted that sub-county implementation committees have already been constituted to coordinate operations at the local level. He added that regular coordination meetings both physical and virtual will be held to maintain alignment and enable timely decision-making.
Ms. Njeri called for enhanced community engagement, directing sub-county teams to develop structured public sensitization programmes to promote shared responsibility in maintaining a clean environment. She further urged enforcement teams to adopt localized strategies, including routine monitoring and targeted operations, to curb illegal dumping and foster a culture of environmental responsibility.
She also stressed the importance of involving local leadership and strengthening collaboration with waste collection partners to ensure seamless integration within communities and smooth implementation of the programme.
Nairobi South County Commissioner Mr. Simon Osumba, who also serves as the County Head of NGAOs, called for clear measurable targets to guide implementation and support effective tracking of progress.
